Εγὼ περὶ αὐτῶν ἐρωτῶ, οὐ περὶ τοῦ κόσμου ἐρωτῶ (John 17:9)

Title:  I Pray for Them.  I Do Not Pray for the World

The text is, “Εγὼ περὶ αὐτῶν ἐρωτῶ, οὐ περὶ τοῦ κόσμου ἐρωτῶ ἀλλὰ περὶ ὧν δέδωκάς μοι, ὅτι σοί εἰσιν”.

Εγὼ -> first person, personal, singular, nominative pronoun -> I

περὶ -> preposition taking the genitive for its object word -> for

αὐτῶν -> third person, personal, plural, genitive pronoun -> them

ἐρωτῶ -> first person, singular, present, active, indicative verb -> pray

οὐ -> negative particle -> not

περὶ -> preposition taking the genitive for its object word -> for

τοῦ -> masculine, singular, genitive article -> the

κόσμου -> masculine, singular, genitive noun -> world

ἐρωτῶ -> first person, singular, present, active, indicative verb -> I pray

ἀλλὰ -> coordinating adversative conjunction -> but

περὶ -> preposition taking the genitive for its object word -> for

ὧν -> masculine, plural, genitive, definite, relative pronoun -> whom

δέδωκάς -> second person, singular, perfect, active, indicative verb -> you have given

μοι -> first person, personal, singular, dative pronoun -> to me

ὅτι -> subordinating causative conjunction -> because

σοί -> second person, personal, singular pronoun -> yours

εἰσιν -> third person, plural, present, indicative verb -> they are

The meaning of this verse is,

I pray for them.  I do not pray for the world, but for whom you have given to me, because they are yours.”
