“ἐν” is a preposition taking the dative, or indirect object case, for its object, meaning “in”.

“τῷ” is a singular dative article, meaning “the”.

“κόσμῳ” is a masculine, singular, dative noun meaning “world”.

“ἦν” is a third person singular, imperfect indicative verb of being, meaning “he was”; since it is imperfect, the implication is that his existence has not ended at the time of writing.

The sense of the clause is “he was and is in the world”.
